WHAT IS IYENGAR YOGA?
By Aman Keays
My first experience of Iyengar Yoga without knowing anything about it at the time, was that my body had been worked out totally, my mind felt at ease with the way things were at that moment, and my heart was open enough to hug a tree. At that time I did not know these three things were possible from a yoga class.
Sri B.K.S. Iyengar has developed and pioneered the art of teaching yoga through his practice of over sixty years.
He is one of the most, if not the most renowned yoga masters of our time and has popularized yoga through his precise and inspired approach to correct alignment, development of strength, flexability and stamina.
Asanas (poses) are put together in such a manner as to attend to all our needs as human beings growing old together.
Asanas are also individualized to each persons body type and special needs through the use of props if needed and expert instruction.
We are taught to learn about ourselves and how to practice.
In a spiritual sense, Iyengar yoga is a practical way to experience meditation in action. As our maturity seasons as practitioners from the clarity we get from single pointed concentration, it expands to multi pointed concentration or an awareness of this moment really being enough just as it is.
It has been my experience, that as our practice deepens, we begin to understand through awareness, the union of body, mind and spirit, which is the essence of yoga.
These ideas can sound very lofty, but the beauty of Iyengar yoga is a practical path by which we can experience these insights for ourselves.
