THE MEANING OF THE INVOCATION
By Geeta Iyengar

To purify the mind, purify the consciousness, Patanjali gave the science of yoga to us. To purify our use of words and speech, he gave a commentary on grammar to us, so that our use of word and way of speaking is clarified, distinct and pure.

To remove the impurities of the body, he gave us the science of medicine.

Let me go near the one who has given these things to us.

Let me bow down my head with my folded hands to Lord Patanjali.

From the hand up to the head he has the shape of a human.

In his hand he is holding the conch and the disc.

On top of his head he has got a thousand hoods of the cobra, because he is the incarnation of Adishesha, the greatest cobra.

I bow down to Patanjali

POSES FOR THE MONTH:

In each calendar month, we break down the poses (asanas) into four categories. This is done so the fundamental asanas can be practiced in a systematic way. Those who come on a monthly basis can practice consistently standing poses the first week, forward bends the second week, backbends the third week and inversions the fourth week.

We can all use deep relaxation, that's why each class ends with Savasana
